DIY Website Builder vs Hiring an Agency: What's Actually Different
Plenty of small businesses start with a DIY builder - Wix, Squarespace, Shopify's own tools - and there's nothing wrong with that as a starting point. We've inherited a few ourselves, like Wanaka Tractor Services', where we didn't touch the underlying Wix site at all, just built them a proper booking form on top of it. Plenty of businesses genuinely don't need more than that.
The difference shows up once a business outgrows what a template can do, or once the time spent wrestling the builder starts costing more than hiring someone would have. A DIY builder is optimised to be easy to start, not necessarily easy to finish - the further from the template you get, the harder it fights you.
What an agency actually does differently isn't magic, it's mostly two things: building around what your specific business needs instead of what the template allows, and being the point of contact when something needs changing instead of it being entirely on you. That second part matters more than people expect - a site that only you can maintain is a site that quietly stops getting maintained.
There's no universal right answer here. A simple one-person business with a straightforward offer can do perfectly well on a DIY builder for years. A business that needs a real product catalogue, integrated bookings, or a brand that needs to look genuinely considered - that's usually where a DIY builder starts working against you instead of for you.
If you're not sure which side of that line your business sits on, that's a fair thing to ask us directly - we'd rather tell you honestly than sell you a rebuild you don't need.
